Seth Rogen was being eyed to play The Penguin opposite Robert Pattinson’s The Batman until the idea fizzled.
It seems Warner Bros. was eyeing Seth Rogen to play The Penguin opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman after Jonah Hill decided to play The Riddler. According to Borys Kit, Seth Rogen was almost our new Penguin, but it seems that it wasn’t meant to be.
On the Seth Rogen BATMAN rumor: there were some initial talks for him to play Penguin while WB courted Hill for Riddler (once they settled on him actually playing Riddler and not Penguin), but that too didn’t work out.
Whoever is ultimately cast in the role will join a long line of legendary actors who have brought the DC Comics villain to life. The Penguin has previously been played by Danny Devito, Burgess Meredith and Robin Lord Taylor in various live-action DC projects.
The casting of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman came as a surprise to many — almost as surprising as Ben Affleck’s exit from the role after playing the DC Comics hero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Although Robert Pattinson had been a rumored contender amongst many young actors including Ansel Elgort, Dylan O’Brien, Logan Lerman, Noah Centineo, Jack O’Connell, Kit Harrington, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Richard Madden, and Armie Hammer, it ultimately came down to Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult, with Robert Pattinson landing the role.
Plot details for the film are still under wraps, though the project starring Robert Pattinson seems to be centered on a younger Caped Crusader as he tackles several of his more traditional enemies such as The Penguin and Catwoman. While Warner Bros. is set to restart the character’s story on the big screen, Matt Reeves has confirmed that his film will not be directly based on Frank Miller’s Year One comic. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is also allegedly the first chapter of a trilogy, much like the Christopher Nolan-directed films with Christian Bale as Batman.
