Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is projected to break the Labor Day weekend box office record worldwide.

2021 has been unusual in terms of release dates, with a comic book movie as big as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hitting theaters over Labor Day weekend. Normally, studios will steer clear from this release date window, but spaces are limited with so many delays due to the pandemic.

According to Deadline, Shang-Chi is expected to break the Labor Day weekend box office record with a $90 million-plus opening worldwide. $45-50 million is projected for the Marvel film in the states alone.

Shang-Chi continues Marvel’s ongoing streak of positive reviews from critics and follows Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, which earned $80.4 million from theater sales and currently holds the spot as the biggest domestic opening during the pandemic so far. Black Widow notably had a release on Disney Plus as well, but Shang-Chi will just open in theaters.

Regardless of how Shang-Chi performs at the box office, it’s expected that the characters introduced in the film will play a major role in future projects from Marvel Studios.

Here is the synopsis for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:

“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the upcoming Marvel film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung. The upcoming movie will hit theaters on September 3, 2021.
