Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg recently took to Letterboxd to troll haters of his latest comic book movie. This move comes after Fury of the Gods received a lukewarm reception from critics and an underwhelming performance at the worldwide box office, suggesting that audiences weren’t particularly enamored with the DC Universe sequel.
David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods Letterboxd review was a clear response to the criticism that the adult version of Billy Batson, played by Zachary Levi, had a “goofy” personality that clashed with the more serious demeanor of his teenage counterpart, portrayed by Asher Angel. Sandberg posted a half-star review of his own movie to Letterboxd, writing: “Billy and Shazam have different personalities. I really wish someone would point this out to the director. Unwatchable!”
While some fans may have been disappointed by the movie’s reception, David F. Sandberg’s move to troll haters shows that he’s not taking the criticism to heart. It’s not uncommon for directors or creators to receive negative feedback on their work, but Sandberg’s response highlights his confidence in his vision for the Shazam! sequel.
The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies set to hit theaters this year. Will Shazam and the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DC Universe? Only newly-named DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran Safran know.
