‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ Is The Lowest-Grossing DCEU Movie After Disastrous Box Office Run

Is Shazam's cinematic future doomed?

The magic didn’t carry over for Shazam! Fury of the Gods at the box office. The sequel to the 2019 DC Comics film Shazam! is now the lowest-grossing film in the DC Extended Universe, following its less-than-stellar performance in theaters worldwide.

Warner Bros. greenlit the follow-up to Shazam! after the original film raked in $363 million globally, against a budget of $90 million. Although the original was only a modest success, Warner Bros. saw promise in the franchise and decided to invest in a sequel.

However, Shazam! Fury of the Gods fell far short of expectations, grossing a mere $133.4 million worldwide during its theatrical run. It’s worth noting that the sequel even underperformed when compared to other DCEU movies that were released during the pandemic and had simultaneous premieres on HBO Max. Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad, despite facing pandemic-induced challenges, managed to pull in $169.6 million and $168.7 million, respectively.

The poor performance of Shazam! Fury of the Gods is particularly disheartening, considering its opening weekend grossed only $30 million. Such a weak debut was far from promising and hinted at the disappointing trajectory the movie would ultimately take.

The FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies set to hit theaters this year. Will Shazam and the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DC Universe? Only newly-named DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran Safran know.

The talent behind the Shazam! sequel

David F. Sandberg directed Shazam! Fury of the Gods from a script written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, D.J. Cotrona, Grace Caroline Currey, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Millans, Cooper Andrews, Djimon Hounsou, Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren.

The official Shazam! Fury of the Gods synopsis reads as follows: “Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.”
