‘Shazam’ Producer Offers Update On Film’s Status; Will Fit ‘Nicely’ Into World But Be ‘Different’

New-Shazam-2012-New-52

Beyond the casting of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and a release date, it’s been pretty quiet regarding the upcoming Shazam film over at New Line. We’ve yet to hear about a writer or director attached to the project but we now have some updates on the film’s status from Dwayne Johnson’s producing partner Dany Garcia. Speaking with Newsweek, Garcia began by commenting on the response to the last few DC films, revealing that they aren’t too worried due to the two of them being  heavily involved on all fronts as well as their different approach to the DC Comics adaptation.

“Shazam! is to live in the same world [as the other films] but we have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors… it’s a different set-up. We don’t feel fettered by, or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation—that we be able to control the tone and the voice, and do it the way we want to.”

The producer then went to comment on how the film would fit in with the rest of the DC Extended Universe by stating that it needs to be “of the world” before adding the following.

“You’ve got Justice League, Wonder Woman with a different director, so you’re going to see different points of view. I think by the time we land with [Shazam!] we’ll fit nicely within the world that’s been created, but not such a shorthand relationship. [It’ll be] enough that people say, ‘Oh, this is within the family,’ but the culture will be a little different.”

As for the status of the film? Garcia reveals that they’re getting drafts of the film’s script in and that it is very important that they “make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam”.

“We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible. We’ve got so many wonderful superhero franchises out there… we don’t need to run away from them and say ‘we can’t be that,’ but it’s important to understand what are the best aspects of a Batman [movie] versus Avengers versus Deadpool? What are the elements people are responding to? We want to move the needle.”

No real surprise here that Johnson is so heavily involved, as the actor tends to be very hands on when it comes to projects with his name attached. Now we just need to wait patienitly to see who they attach to start in the titular role as well as direct. No rush guys. Let us know what you think about Garcia’s comments in the section below.

Shazam is currently set to hit theaters on April 5, 2019.

Writer of words. Eater of pie. Drinker of coffee. Destroyer of worlds. Uh...yeah. Other opinions on this site are definitely not mine.

This character has so much potential within the DCEU. It’s such a cool story that can be really fun given the right director. I’m really curious to see who plays Shazam though.

    • Maximillian Pegasus

      Channing Tatum or Armie Hammer.

      • SAMURAI36

I’ll see you on those, and raise one John Cena.

        • Chris W

You want an actor not a gorilla.

          • SAMURAI36

So is that what the Rock is as well?

          • Chris W

The Rock is a much better actor than Cena. And the Rock paid his dues early on getting better at his craft; which is why he’s better than Cena. Not saying Cena can’t get better. But giving Cena the lead in a $150 mill + film today is like giving Rock the lead in a $150 mill+ film 15 years ago.

I have to agree. The Rock’s acting has far improved from the day’s of DOOM. Whenever I think of John Cena I think of the Marine and how horrible his acting was. If Cena had been working at it all along I’d honestly be all for him In the lead role

Heck yeah. I hope they follow the New 52 version: Billy Batson is a little jerk who’s stuck in an adoption agency and finally gets taken in by a multi-cultural family. He doesn’t want them but has no other options. Sneaks out at night and stumbles upon the wizard, Shazam’s cave and receives the power of the Living Lightning.

Black Adam wants to be the sole bearer of the Living Lighting, its champion, and it forces Billy to grow up and take on responsibility to face Adam. Really epic stuff. Great potential for character drama with Billy going on a twisty, bendy character arc. So excited for it.

    • SAMURAI36

      OMG, yes, totally this.

  • Maximillian Pegasus

I didn’t know Shazam was at New Line, i thought that was only Vertigo, does that mean JLDark is also at New Line?

    • SAMURAI36

      Yep.

  • Carl

Let me know when they cast Channing Tatum.

    • Christopher Nolan

They can’t. Tatum is already doing Gambit.

      • Carl

        That’ll get cancelled. :)

      • MistaWu

Gambit is never going to happen. Horrible character. Weak backstory.

“they will be heavily involved in the film on all fronts”…. They? Who is she to get involved creative-wise? She’s has no knowledge what-so-ever creative-wise in films. She’s already milking half of Rock’s money & she’s forcing Rock to do so many crap projects (tv-shows, films) through 7-bucks productions as she will get half the money. He’s hollywood’s highest paid actor. And she is making him to do tv-shows to get money. & The Rock can’t deny her as she is his ex-wife. One has to just look into numerous upcoming crap films & tv shows of The Rock to understand how she’s sabotaging his career.

And…. anyone too overcareful about something is bound to fail. They are taking forever to make this film. Announced in 2014, it should have been released by now (if they are working) Lazy a$$e$….
