‘Shazam’ Producer Offers Update On Film’s Status; Will Fit ‘Nicely’ Into World But Be ‘Different’

Beyond the casting of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and a release date, it’s been pretty quiet regarding the upcoming Shazam film over at New Line. We’ve yet to hear about a writer or director attached to the project but we now have some updates on the film’s status from Dwayne Johnson’s producing partner Dany Garcia. Speaking with Newsweek, Garcia began by commenting on the response to the last few DC films, revealing that they aren’t too worried due to the two of them being  heavily involved on all fronts as well as their different approach to the DC Comics adaptation.

“Shazam! is to live in the same world [as the other films] but we have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors… it’s a different set-up. We don’t feel fettered by, or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation—that we be able to control the tone and the voice, and do it the way we want to.”

The producer then went to comment on how the film would fit in with the rest of the DC Extended Universe by stating that it needs to be “of the world” before adding the following.

“You’ve got Justice League, Wonder Woman with a different director, so you’re going to see different points of view. I think by the time we land with [Shazam!] we’ll fit nicely within the world that’s been created, but not such a shorthand relationship. [It’ll be] enough that people say, ‘Oh, this is within the family,’ but the culture will be a little different.”

As for the status of the film? Garcia reveals that they’re getting drafts of the film’s script in and that it is very important that they “make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam”.

“We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible. We’ve got so many wonderful superhero franchises out there… we don’t need to run away from them and say ‘we can’t be that,’ but it’s important to understand what are the best aspects of a Batman [movie] versus Avengers versus Deadpool? What are the elements people are responding to? We want to move the needle.”

No real surprise here that Johnson is so heavily involved, as the actor tends to be very hands on when it comes to projects with his name attached. Now we just need to wait patienitly to see who they attach to start in the titular role as well as direct. No rush guys. Let us know what you think about Garcia’s comments in the section below.

Shazam is currently set to hit theaters on April 5, 2019.
