Zachary Levi’s ‘Shazam!’ Costume Cost $1M To Make & There’s 10 Of Them

Shazam Zachary Levi Costume

Shazam has one of the most iconic costumes in all of comics and bringing it to life on the big screen was always going to come at a cost. Thanks now to Total Film Magazine, we can put an exact cash value on star Zachary Levi’s costume for the upcoming Shazam! movie.

In a Syfy article referencing Total Film Magazine, it was pointed out that the titular hero’s costume costs $1 million to make and that, according to costume designer Leah Butler, precisely ten of them were made for Shazam!:

“Each suit costs, oh boy, upwards of a million? We have ten suits.”

Butler also went on to reveal some rather interesting details about the suit-making process:

“It took 16 weeks to build the costume. We had to scan Zach’s body and start building the costume even before he started his very strict regime — his diet and working out.”

Butler also mentions in her Total Film Magazine interview that they had to have  Zachary Levi’s body sculpted so that they would have his exact measurements available on demand. Sounds like it was a pretty strenuous process behind the scenes for Shazam!.

In total, that is a $10 million costume budget, which does not sound like a lot since it is a superhero movie and we are used to seeing staggering numbers associated with superhero films, but that seems like a hefty price tag for Zachary Levi’s wardrobe. What do you think? Is $10 million a lot for a single costume? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
