‘Shazam!’ Star Zachary Levi Says Working For DC Was More Fun Than Marvel

During his appearance at MegaCon in Orlando, Shazam! star Zachary Levi explained why he had more fun working for DC than Marvel.

DC’s Shazam! debuted to praise from critics who commended the film for its humor, heart, and the stellar performance from Zachary Levi. However, Shazam! was not Zachary Levi’ first foray into the world of comic book movies, as the actor previously portrayed Fandral the Dashing in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok after Josh Dallas was unable to reprise the role. When asked if he had more fun working on Shazam! or Thor, Zachary Levi offered an understandable reason for why he enjoyed his time on the DC film more than the Marvel franchise:

“Well, I mean, I had more fun working for DC. I mean, I got to be my own superhero with DC, bro. It was super cool that I was cast, although I wasn’t able to do the first Thor, I was cast in that by Kenneth Branagh, who I think is an incredible talent.”

Zachary Levi elaborated on why his limited role in Marvel’s Thor films couldn’t possibly match playing the lead hero of DC’s Shazam!:

“This is so dope, and we had some fun, but we didn’t really do all that much. I mean, anyone who saw the movie, you should know, they didn’t really go that direction with the movie, so I didn’t have that much to do. So, I couldn’t possibly have had as much fun as going and being my own guy, who by the way, again, is a 14-year-old in a superhero adult body. The fun and funny and joy and heart, and everything that comes from a premise like that… that’s a fun movie!”

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! is now playing in theaters.
