In a recent post, Shazam! star Zachary Levi stated that the upcoming film stands on its own.

In the post, the actor was asked if Shazam! would stand on its own or if one needed to be up to date on the DC Universe to understand it:

Trying this again…

Does #Shazam stand alone, or does one need to be current with the DCEU?

Zachary Levi then assured that the movie was set to be its own thing but would include plenty of easter eggs for the people who are caught up on the films in the universe:

The movie is completely trackable on its own merit. That said, there a lot of fun little nods/homages/Easter eggs that can be enjoyed should one be caught up in the DCEU. ?

You can see the full exchange below:

From the look of things, Zachary Levi has confidence in the film’s ability to be its own thing.

What do you all make of this? Does the fact that the film seems to be staying away from the larger universe worry you or is it for the best? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Here is the synopsis for Shazam!:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
