‘James Bond 25’: Denis Villeneuve, David Mackenzie On Shortlist To Direct

Deadline reports Yann Demange, Denis Villeneuve, and Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie are currently on the shortlist to helm the upcoming twenty-fifth installment of the James Bond franchise.

According to Variety, Demange — best known for his Jack O’Connell starring film ’71 — has emerged as the frontrunner to direct. Mackenzie became a hot choice after Hell or High Water earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination last year and was initially on the shortlist to direct the Scarface remake for Universal Pictures.

As for Villeneuve, the Oscar-winning director is currently committed to the Dune remake once he is finished his work on Blade Runner 2049. There is no timetable for production on the remake of Dune but Villeneuve revealed in February that the film was in the earliest stages of planning, leaving the possibility he could direct in question as MGM and Eon Productions will be looking to lock down a director for the project now that a release date has been officially announced. James Bond himself, Daniel Craig has yet to be announced to be returning for another outing however, the actor has been reportedly confirmed to be suiting up as 007 once more.

In addition to the lead role, the distribution rights still hang in the balance. Sony’s four-picture contract to distribute the Bond series was up with Spectre in 2015 after nine years beginning with the Craig iteration of the character in Casino Royale. Five studios entered a bidding war in April with Sony said to be making the biggest push to score a contract renewal from the family owned company founded by Bond producer Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli and Henry Saltzman in 1961.

For the twenty-fifth installment, franchise veterans Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have returned to pen the script. The duo has written on every Bond film from the last 18 years ranging from The World is not Enough all the way up to 2015’s Spectre. Eon Productions is also rumored to be shooting the film in Croatia.

Bond 25 is currently slated to release in the U.S. on November 8, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Bond 25 as we learn it.
