‘Dark Phoenix’ Director Reveals Why New X-Men Film Introduces Dazzler

Dark Phoenix is currently showing in theaters and director Simon Kinberg has finally dished on the cameo from Dazzler in the new X-Men movie.

in an exclusive interview with CBR, Simon Kinberg talked about the details of Dark Phoenix. He spoke specifically about the sound-altering mutant, Dazzler and why he decided to introduce her in the movie:

Well, I mean, honestly? I’m a huge fan and I love Dazzler. And also, if you remember the Dark Phoenix storyline, she’s obviously a part of the Dark Phoenix Saga as told in the original comic. So I wanted somewhere in there just to have an Easter egg of her, so I felt like it was the right story to do it with, and there was an appropriate scene for her to be singing in, so I brought her into the movie.”

As Simon Kinberg explained, Dazzler is an integral piece to the Dark Phoenix storyline. Dazzler made her first appearance in The X-Men Issue $130, right in the middle of the famous X-Men storyline, the Dark Phoenix Saga. In the comics, Dazzler can manipulate sound waves and make them into light waves or “dazzling” lights. Scott Summers and Jean Grey discovered Dazzler while she was performing and she helps them fend off the Hellfire Club.

In the Dark Phoenix movie, Dazzler is portrayed by Halston Sage. She is performing with her abilities after the X-Men return from a dangerous space mission, similar to the source material.

Here is the synopsis for Dark Phoenix:

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.

Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

Dark Phoenix will be released in theaters on June 7, 2019.
