Director Simon McQuoid Returning For ‘Mortal Kombat’ Sequel

Get over here!

Mortal Kombat HBO Max Godzilla vs. Kong

Simon McQuoid will reportedly return to direct the upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel at New Line.

Mortal Kombat was one of the more successful films released during the middle of the pandemic. The film reboot of the popular video game debuted in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021. In theaters, Mortal Kombat opened at the top spot and totaled $54 million at the end of its run. However, the film found most of its success on HBO Max, where it still holds the highest views over films like The Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs. Kong, Wonder Woman 1984, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League in their first 17 days on the service.

Mortal Kombat 2 Movies Forward

Given Mortal Kombat‘s success by pandemic standards, Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel. In January, it was reported that Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater would pen the sequel. Deadline is now sharing that Simon McQuoid, who helmed the first film, will be back in the director’s chair for the sequel.

Here is the synopsis for the first film:

Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe.

Directed by Simon McQuoid from a script written by Greg Russo, the film stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena and Elissa Cadwell as Nitara. Lewis Tan is also on board as a new edition to the franchise Cole Young.
