Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog grossed a total of $70 million domestically over the 4-day holiday weekend.

Decades after the first Sonic the Hedgehog video was released, the classic video game was finally given the big screen treatment with a feature film from Paramount Pictures. While many reviews for Sonic have been lukewarm, it appears moviegoers were eager to see the blue hedgehog on screen and helped propel the film towards a record-breaking $70 million opening weekend.

According to Paramount, Sonic the Hedgehog will reach the $70 million mark in 4-days after grossing $16.5 million on Sunday. With this total, Sonic the Hedgehog will have the best domestic opening for a feature film adaptation of a video game property on both a 3-day and 4-day basis.

According to the outlet, Paramount expects Sonic the Hedgehog to earn an additional $12 million today to carry it to $70 million. Such a showing would place Sonic the Hedgehog in 4th place for best President’s Day openers, behind only Black Panther ($242M), Deadpool ($152.1M), and Fifty Shades of Grey ($93M).

Here is the official synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog:

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centres on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.

Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, Sonic the Hedgehog features the voice talent of Ben Schwartz as the titular character and stars James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Neal McDonough as US Army Major Bennington, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, and Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl. Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Debs Howard, and Elfina Luk also star.

Sonic the Hedgehog will be released in theaters on February 14, 2020.
