Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has become the highest grossing video game movie in U.S. history.
Nearly a month after it premiered in theaters, Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has broken yet another milestone at the box office. The sequel based on the iconic Sega franchise has become the highest-grossing video game movie of all-time at the U.S. box office.
As of May 1, 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has grossed $152 million at the U.S. box office, already surpassing the original 2020 film that grossed $149 million in its entire run. This is the latest record the film has broken at the box office, which included becoming the biggest opening weekend for both a video game film and a Jim Carrey film in history.
The further success of Sonic 2 is certainly exciting for Paramount Pictures, which has been looking for more franchises to add to their stable of films, given that the studio has struggled in comparison to their competitors in recent years. 2022 has so far been a pretty fruitful year for the studio, thanks to the success of Scream (2022), Jackass Forever and The Lost City. The studio hopes to further capitalize on their momentum with their long-delayed Top Gun: Maverick.
Here is the official synopsis for the film:
The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. From the filmmakers behind The Fast and the Furious and Deadpool, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Jim Carrey returning, alongside new additions Shemar Moore, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.
Based on the SEGA video game characters, the movie is directed by Jeff Fowler and stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey with Idris Elba and Jim Carrey. The script for the film was written by Pat Casey & Josh Miller and John Whittington from the latter two’s story.
