It seems like Paramount Pictures and Sega have a hit on their hands as Sonic The Hedgehog has taken $200 million at the global box office so far.
While video game movie adaptations are frequently criticized, it seems like Sonic The Hedgehog has broken the curse by proving to be a surprise hit for Paramount Pictures and Sega. After the infamous backlash over Sonic’s original design, the film was delayed so the studio could revamp the speedster’s look. And now it seems that the gamble has paid off, since Sonic The Hedgehog has taken $200 million worldwide so far.
According to Box Office Mojo, while Sonic The Hedgehog took $107,708,435 domestically, the plucky blue speedster recently raced past the $200 million mark worldwide. The financial success of the family adventure alone means that a sequel from Paramount and Sega seems likely. But critics also praised the film, explaining that the heart of the partnership between James Marsden’s Tom Wachowski and his new blue friend was surprisingly touching.
Are you surprised by the film’s success? Did you enjoy seeing the blue speedster in live action? Sound off in the comments!
