‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Races Past ‘Detective Pikachu’ At Domestic Box Office

Sonic The Hedgehog officially has the highest grossing domestic run for a video game movie, as it recently raced past Detective Pikachu.

While Detective Pikachu had a domestic run of $144.1 million when it opened back in May 2019, Sonic The Hedgehog recently overtook the lovable Pokemon movie by reaching $145.8 million this the past weekend. Sonic The Hedgehog provided fans with a fun adventure that introduced new audiences to the character while still remaining true to the spirit of the original games. The ending even looked to introduce more recognizable elements and characters for future Sonic The Hedgehog sequels.

Sonic The Hedgehog earned $2.58 million this past weekend which just tipped its domestic run over that of Detective Pikachu‘s. Detective Pikachu still has a higher global total with $433 million, Sonic The Hedgehog‘s China release has been delayed thanks to the coronavirus, so it stands to reason that the blue speedster could overtake the Pokemon film once it debuts in the Middle Kingdom. Currently, Sonic The Hedgehog‘s global run stands at $306.5 million. Since video game movies typically struggle both critically and commercially, it’s great to see the lovable hedgehog succeed with its domestic run of $145.8 million.
