This Sonic The Hedgehog Redesign Gives The Speedster A Terrifying Makeover

A piece of fan art inspired by the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie gives the iconic video game character a terrifying makeover.

Digital artist George Evangelista has shared his own take on Sonic’s live-action design. His Sonic has the realistic textures that the original film’s design had, but his eyes are more reflective of his likeness in the video games and cartoon series. Mix them together, and here you have a design that’s more fitting of a grittier Sonic video game and/or film that could certainly frighten younger audiences.

After the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer dropped earlier this year, the design of the titular character was universally panned. As a result, Sonic was delayed from its original November release date to February of 2020 to give the animators an opportunity to redesign the blue speedster.

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog is set to follow small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski (played by Westworld star James Marsden) and the titular Hedgehog as they embark on a road trip in a race against time to recover the blue hedgehog’s rings before the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Here is the official synopsis for the movie:

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centres on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.

Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, the film features the voice talent of Ben Schwartz as the titular character and stars James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Neal McDonough as US Army Major Bennington, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, and Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl. Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Debs Howard, and Elfina Luk also star in undisclosed roles.

Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in theaters on February 14, 2020. Stay tuned for the latest news on the Sonic movie!
