Sony has released an official statement on the ending of their Spider-Man deal with Marvel Studios.
Earlier today it felt like the worst news possible happened–Marvel Studios ended their deal with Sony that kept Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After a lot of back and forth it was revealed that Kevin Feige wanted to make a big change in their deal that would give Disney and Marvel Studios 50% of the profits made from future Spider-Man films. That would be a 45% increase from their original 5% deal with Sony.
Fans around the globe quickly became disappointed, launched petitions and used Social Media to voice their disdain with the ending of the deal. Both studios have remained quiet, but now Sony has released an official statement explaining the events that led to the deal not being renewed.
In the official statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, a Sony spokesperson states:
Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise, we are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.
