Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off ‘Venom’ Back In Development; Lands New Writer

Spider-Man Spin-Off VenomWell, this one happened sooner than anyone expected. With Marvel Studios helping Sony get their Spider-Man franchise back on track, the studio is once again moving forward with their planned Venom spin-off film. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the studio has tapped writer Dante Harper, who did re-writes on Edge Of Tomorrow and wrote the film Sleepless Night, to write the script for the project and will be overseen and produced by Avi Arad & Matt Tolmach.

The report states that the project is being developed separately from the upcoming Spider-Man starring Tom Holland and expected to launch it’s own franchise. Now, while it is being said that it won’t be connected to those films, I’d wait for some further details regarding that matter. I’d be beyond surprised if Sony decided to take ten steps forward with the franchise only to make a move that would take five backwards. There’s no details currently regarding which incarnation of the character the film will focus on or what the film’s plot will focus on. Are you excited about a potential solo Venom film? Which incarntion of the character would you like to see it focus on? Sound off in the comments section below.

How will they do a Venom with no connections to Spider-Man??

    F*CK this.

Are you serious? Avi Arad? That guy is ancient, and is the reason the other franchises crashed and burned!!! I thought Marvel was in the fold now?

    • Bjax

As soon as I saw Avi’s name, I knew exactly why this project was moving forward. Marvel is only in the fold in that Spider-man is part of the MCU, but Sony still has the rights to the character and his “universe” of characters. Sony seems hellbent on creating and pumping out a Spider-man cinematic universe not matter what.

Dumbest thing ever Sony back at it again

Ah man… Have they learned nothing at Sony? We all want to see Venom and even a standalone Venom would be cool… But Venom comes from Spider-Man. You need to tell that story first. Until you made a good Venom vs Spider-Man origin story, doing a standalone Venom movie is pointless. Also, Venom comes into play when Peter is much older and married to MJ. They just rebooted Spidey again, making him very young. They kind of shot themselves in the foot about Venom by doing that, but it’s the right thing to do. They have to be patient. Built up Spider-Man the right way and eventually Venom will naturally come into play and then they can think of spinning him off.

Sony needs to learn the lessons of Deadpool and Marvel… We love those movies because they are loyal to the original source material. They need to stop trying to rewrite original content because they want to rush things out to make a quick buck.
