‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Producer On Why Uncle Ben Won’t Be Included

Spider-Man

Even those with a minimal amount of knowledge on Spider-Man have probably heard the phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Those words uttered by Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben have informed the characters core beliefs and in some form or another have been included in the previous two Spider-Man cinematic depictions. However, Spider-Man: Homecoming will not include the tragic death of Uncle Ben and presumably will not feature the iconic line as a result. In an  interview with CinemaBlend, producer Eric Carroll explained why the latest Spider-Man film opted not to include Uncle Ben or focus on his death.

Carroll explained that focusing on Uncle Ben’s death would distract from the lighter tone of the film.

“We thought that, to keep this fun, light tone, as soon as they have to have their, like, ‘Let’s remember our dearly departed father figure’ — it derails that a little. And again, what we’re trying to tell is this sort of fun story of the kid who is doing all the wrong things for the right reasons. And once you do that, it stops becoming a fun movie about a kid trying to be a kid. He’s mourning the loss of a parent.”

Carroll did assure fans that while Uncle Ben will not be included in the film, he did still exist in this version of the story.

“They talk about [Ben], absolutely. It’s not… it’s not a huge thing that I want to go into too much, but there is an acknowledgment that there was a Ben. … He’s not around anymore, for sure. They talk about that. We don’t go into any specifics. … We’re implying he’s dead. We have not at all, again, gone into trying to change his origin story.”

Many fans, myself included, interpreted Peter Parker’s explanation to Tony Stark on why chooses to use his powers to help others as an acknowledgement of the lessons imparted to him by Uncle Ben. While Spider-Man: Homecoming may not depict the death of Uncle Ben, the story is generally familiar enough to audiences that the latest reboot can probably afford to exude that element of the the title character’s origins. However, the fact that the character will be acknowledge and presumably left behind some words of wisdom for Peter should reassure fans that this important part of the character’s history will not be discarded.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released in theaters on July 6, 2017.
