An eagle-eyed fan has found evidence in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer that suggests Doctor Octopus isn’t in control of himself.

It seems strange to write out but Sony and Marvel actually dropped the No Way Home trailer earlier this week. The trailer naturally lit the internet on fire as everyone rejoiced at seeing Tom Holland put on his Spidey suit once again. Of course, the trailer also teased at Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Rhys Ifans’ Lizard, and the notable, explicit inclusion of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, who taunts Parker with a classic “Hello, Peter.”

Fans might remember Molina’s Doctor Octopus redeeming himself in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, as he realized the error of his ways while trying blow up New York City with an artificial sun. So seeing Molina return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially as a bad guy is a bit jarring. This led many to believe that Marvel would be ditching the character’s emotional arc that was established nearly two decades ago. However, an eagle-eyed fan might have just found a detail to support a theory that suggests Doctor Octopus isn’t in control – his arms are.

As the video above suggests, the arms glow white when Doctor Octopus is in control but turn red when it’s the arms in the driver’s seat. Seeing as Molina is de-aged for his return and he previously revealed that he will be playing the same character from the 2004 film, it will be interesting to see how Spider-Man: No Way Home tackles Doctor Octopus’ character.

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”
