Spider-Man: No Way Home managed to swoop in with over $120 million on Friday.
Talk about overachieving! The third film in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy swung away with $121.5 million in domestic earnings. Not only was Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s Friday opening a pandemic best, it also just happens to be the second-best! This impressive Friday opening pegs it as the second-highest Friday opening of all time, just behind Avengers: Endgame‘s $156 million. The multiverse team-up film dethroned Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened with $119 million all the way back in 2015.
The film managed to rack up over $50 million in Thursday previews, so it’s no surprise the Tom Holland threequel is doing gangbusters at the box office. Original projects saw the film opening with $150 million over the weekend. Those projections have since been updated to a whopping $242 million.
Should those projections hold through, Spider-Man: No Way Home would have the fourth-highest opening weekend of all time, dethroning Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opened with over $220 million in 2017. It’s likely that Sony’s updated projections are conservative and that the Marvel film could swoop in with over $250 million.
Anticipation for the threequel has been through the roof over the last few months. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see if some of the rumors surrounding the film were true. The film also concludes Tom Holland’s “Home” trilogy, which has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2017. Despite the Omicron variant causing cases of COVID-19 to rise throughout the world, the film is still performing like an Avengers film. It just goes to show that no one wants to stay home when Spidey’s in theatres.
