Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Bob Persichetti revealed a thank you to the late Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during their Oscar acceptance was cut off by the orchestra.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended up taking home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature; the biggest win for a Marvel film at the Academy Awards. The Oscar win was fitting, given the deaths of Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko last year. Stan Lee was even featured during the “In Memorium” segment during the Oscars while showing a clip from his X-Men: The Last Stand cameo. Many people took the stage and spoke during Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Oscar acceptance speech, which was later cut off by the orchestra. While speaking backstage, co-director revealed Bob Persichetti he was about to thank Stan Lee and Steve Ditko before he was cut off:
“We were just going to thank Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for inspiring this whole thing and for being a force of believing that all of us, human beings, have the potential, the capacity, to be heroes. Challenge the audience to believe in themselves and believe in their neighbour and really be positive and make a difference in the world.”
