‘Star Trek’ Actor Jonathan Frakes Recalls Playing Captain America

Star Trek: The Next Generation star Jonathan Frakes recalled his experience playing Captain America to open comic book stores.

Actor Jonathan Frakes is probably best known for his role as Commander William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, Frakes recently recalled playing Captain America for a time, although not for film or television.

During an interview with GalaxyCon, Jonathan Frakes revealed that he suited up as Captain America to open comic book stores. The Star Trek actor explained that he came upon the Captain America gig after befriending someone who had been hired to open comic book stores dressed as Spider-Man:

“I did it for a couple of years. I was in New York and a friend of mine, Charlie Davis, and I were dating girls that stayed in the same house in New York which was the same house that used to be in the movie Backstage… It was like a sorority of actors if you will. And Charlie and I met there and he had been hired by someone to go out as Spider-Man to open up comic book stores. And Marvel on 575 Madison Avenue, the eighth floor, had built him a costume. And he did a couple of them and he said, ‘They’re looking for a guy to do Captain America. You should go meet the people over there.’ So I went over there and, to make it long story short, he and I ended up going out on this weird tour.”

Jonathan Frakes also discussed his schedule during his Captain America days and recalled what he would be tasked with doing for his appearances:

“We’d go out on a Friday, much like a convention, and we’d go to Omaha or we’d go to Chicago and we’d have a schedule and somebody… would pick us up at the airport with a rented Taurus and we’d have a schedule. We’d got to a 7-11, then we’d do a comic book store, then we’d got to a supermarket. Every 20 minutes we’d have to be somewhere, and we’d have these spacesuits on, we’d pull up a block away, I’d get on the hood of the car — first of all, I’d take the garbage can lid that had the big ‘A’ on it out of the thing, I’d gripper on the two wings that Captain America has on his cowl — I’d hold the garbage can lid, I’d stand on the hood of the car, ride into the parking lot of the 7-11 on the Ford Taurus. It was a very glamorous time and we made 50 bucks a day.”

Jonathan Frakes reprised his Star Trek role as William Riker in the CBS All Access series Picard, a follow-up to Next Generation centered on the later years of Patrick Stewart’s titular hero. In the new Star Trek series, Jonathan Frakes’s William Riker is married to Deanna Troi and is later appointed the commanding officer of the USS Zheng He.

Of course, the most famous incarnation of Captain America is almost certainly Chris Evans, who portrayed the character in three standalone films and four Avengers films, in addition to cameo appearances in other Marvel Studios projects. However, Chris Evan retired from the role after his recent appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
