The cast of the Star Wars sequel trilogy have had nothing but love working with both J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson on The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi respectively. And with Abrams returning to direct Episode IX following the departure of Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, the expected returning cast are excited. One of the performers who is most excited to work with Abrams again is John Boyega.
Boyega, who instantly received worldwide recognition as Finn the runaway stormtrooper is expected to return for the final chapter of the sequel trilogy. Given that he had a great experience working with Abrams on The Force Awakens, he is quite pleased to work with him again.
While promoting his film Detroit, Boyega was asked about his thoughts on Abrams’ return to the galaxy far, far away:
“Yeah, I’m really happy [and] really excited. I actually sent him an email and asked him if the real reason is because he misses me. And I think that’s what it is – that’s the only reason why he came back, and I appreciate that.”
Boyega had already met Abrams before he auditioned for the role of Finn in The Force Awakens. In 2012, the actor had a meeting at Bad Robot with Bryan Burk where he eventually met Abrams, who was walking out of an editing room with Tom Cruise. Abrams, who was a fan of Boyega’s performance in Attack the Block promised him that he would try to find a role for him in a future film. Fast forward to 2014, Boyega is cast as one of the new main heroes of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and now the rest is history.
One of Abrams’ greatest strengths as a director is that he is able to get great performances from his cast. When it comes to The Force Awakens, Abrams helped get Boyega to be both charismatic and serious in bringing FN-2187 to life.
Hopefully, Johnson brings out a more serious side of Finn in The Last Jedi given that the marketing shows him and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) infiltrating the First Order. Sure, Boyega will definitely have some more funny moments but returning to the place where you were brainwashed from birth will certainly call for moments of much-needed drama to further develop Finn into the hero he’s destined to be.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in our galaxy on December 15, 2017. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode IX will arrive on December 20, 2019.
