Lucasfilm Remains Quiet On Who Is Helming Those ‘Star Wars’ Films

Disney announced three new Star Wars film release dates today, but Lucasfilm will not confirm whether they are from Rian Johnson or David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

The Skywalker saga will conclude with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker later this year. However, Lucasfilm has plans for two new film series. The first one announced comes from The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson while another will be from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Rian Johnson is expected to write and direct the first of a new Star Wars trilogy outside of the Skywalker saga. The Game of Thrones creators are writing and producing a Star Wars series with new characters as well. Fan have been speculating on which film will go first, and if they will switch off.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the next slate of Star Wars films will be coming in 2022, 2024, and 2026. ABC’s Clayton Sandell reached out to Lucasfilm and asked which film series these dates are for, but the studio declined to say. Rian Johnson is currently working on Knives Out while David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are finishing up with the final season of Game of Thrones, which has two episodes remaining. The filmmakers are also going to plan out the next ten years of Star Wars films with Katheleen Kennedy and The Mandalorian‘s Jon Favreau.
