Last night, the world rejoiced as the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit the internet. Showing off some awesome components of the new film, the teaser – on the official Star Wars YouTube channel – has received over 16 million views within the first 24 hours. One of the biggest mysteries regarding Rey – the lead character of The Force Awakens – involved her parents. For months, fans and theorists alike believed Rey was Luke Skywalker’s daughter; and while that has not been confirmed nor denied, the theory is not the only one. Other theories believe Rey is the granddaughter of Palpatine, or the daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson sat down with Good Morning America to discuss the rumours, and whether or not they will be addressed in the upcoming film:
EXCLUSIVE: @StarWars director @rianjohnson says Rey's parentage will absolutely be addressed in #TheLastJedi. #SWCO pic.twitter.com/wgupPzYDkB

For those who can’t watch the video, check out a transcript of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi interview below:
“It’s something that is absolutely going to be addressed in the movie. It depends on… I can’t say!” Johnson began. “I was about to say something. You almost got me! There are lots of surprises in this movie and there’s lots of twists and turns. And I really want people to experience those when they see the movie for the first time. How we address that and how you feel about that and what happens with that is one of them.”
Now, I am still believe Rey is Luke’s daughter, but I would not be surprised if I was totally incorrect. What do you guys think? What theory is your favourite? Despite the absurdity, I love the Palpatine-granddaughter one. I guess we won’t know the truth about the character until Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theatres everywhere on December 15th, 2017.
