‘Star Wars’: Lucasfilm Officially Announces ‘The Mandalorian’ Movie

The beloved duo from the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian are gearing up for an even bigger adventure that’s bound for movie theaters.

Directed by Jon Favreau, who has been a driving force behind the series, The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to begin production in 2024. Alongside Favreau, key figures such as Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni are joining the production team, bringing their vast experience and creative vision to this exciting new project in the Star Wars universe.

In the same announcement, Lucasfilm also confirmed that it’s developing a second season of Ahsoka for Disney Plus. The first season premiered in August 2023 to critical acclaim.

What Star Wars executives had to say about the Mandalorian movie

Jon Favreau, renowned for his role in shaping “The Mandalorian” series, expressed his enthusiasm for this new venture. “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” he said. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, also shared her thoughts on this development. She recognized the significant contributions of Favreau and Filoni in introducing “two new and beloved characters” to the Star Wars franchise. Kennedy noted, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

With its high-quality production, engaging storylines, and captivating characters, The Mandalorian has proven to be one of the best Disney Plus series to date. While the series hasn’t been officially renewed yet, Din Djarin and Grogu’s story are also expected to continue on the small screen.

The Mandalorian features Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, Omid Abtahi, Taika Waititi, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Temuera Morrison and Katee Sackhoff, among others. The series was created by Jon Favreau and executive produced by Dave Filoni, with episodes directed by Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Peyton Reed, Carl Weathers and Robert Rodriguez.
