The Oxford English Dictionary has officially updated its list of words to include Star Wars terms such as “Jedi,” “Padawan,” and more.
While the Star Wars franchise has introduced multiple terms that are frequently used in modern lingo, the Oxford English Dictionary has now officially recognized a few of these words with its October 2019 update. The Star Wars terms added to the Oxford English Dictionary are “Jedi”, “Force”, “Padawan”, “Lightsabre”, and “Mind Trick”.
Of course, “Force” and “Mind trick” were already part of the Oxford Engish Dictionary, but the former word has been updated to include the Star Wars franchise’s use of the term, with an additional definition reading, “a mystical universal energy field.” The term “Mind trick” has also been updated with a note that reads, “see also Jedi.”
The world Jedi itself is formally defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as follows: “In the fictional universe of the Star Wars films: a member of an order of heroic, skilled warrior monks who are able to harness the mystical power of the Force.” Furthermore, Padawan is defined as “an apprentice Jedi” while “Lightsabre” is described as “a weapon resembling a sword, but having a destructive beam of light in place of a blade.”
Meanwhile, the Star Wars franchise is set to conclude the main episodic saga with the release of The Rise of Skywalker this holiday season.
