Lucasfilm To Begin Planning More ‘Star Wars’ Films By End of 2017

President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that by the end of the year the company will begin to map out the future of the Star Wars franchise.

Lucasfilm Star WarsPresident of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that by the end of the year the company will have begun to map out the future of the Star Wars franchise beyond the sequel trilogy.

In a recent chat with Spanish outlet eCartelera, Kennedy was asked about the rumors of an Obi-Wan spin-off when she explained Lucasfilm’s current plan and also revealed that a read-through of the script for Star Wars: Episode IX written by director Colin Trevorrow and his writing partner Derek Connolly is about to happen. Here is a rough translation of Kennedy’s response:

“To be honest, we are beginning to talk about [the spin-offs] right now. We have four or five weeks immersed in the film ‘Han Solo’ and we are about to read the script of Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX directed, so we have a lot of work at the moment. In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop here. After 40 years of adventures, fans have so much information and so many theories about the way that can take these stories and theories that emerge are sometimes new ideas for us that we hear, read and pay attention to everything what is said. It is clear that the franchise is owned by the as much by the fans as it’s owned by [the people at Lucasfilm].”

A read-through of the script comes as no great surprise as Trevorrow himself recently revealed that a draft had been completed. The story comes from a treatment by Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson. Production is expected to begin sometime this summer.

As for the future of the franchise beyond the sequel trilogy, Kennedy’s words are a bit confusing here considering she recently stated that she was hopeful an announcement regarding the next spin-off film after Han Solo would be coming this summer, perhaps at D23 but it’s possible Kennedy could simply have been referring to the development of future spin-offs beyond the unannounced project she hopes will be revealed this summer.

Next up for Lucasfilm is the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi which hits theaters later this year on December 15, 2017. Following Episode VIII is The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story. The film is being directed by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and is slated for release on May 25, 2018. The franchise will then close out the sequel trilogy with the ninth chapter of the Skywalker saga when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters May 24, 2019.
