Lucasfilm has just dropped a brand new trailer for the upcoming season of Star Wars Rebels that features a lot of new details as the timeline moves closer to the Original Trilogy. Check it out in the video below:
There is definitely a lot to unpack from this trailer. First, it appears the conflict on Mandalore which Sabine became involved with in season 3 continues, as we see both Mandalorians as well as Sabine wielding the Dark Saber. Perhaps her role in the upcoming season will be to unite the factions of Mandalore as one against the Empire.
Continuing with the trend of Alliances, we see familiar faces Saw Gerrera and Mon Mothma. Gerrera urges that you need to take the fight to the Empire, not wait around for the right opportunity. We know from Gerrera’s last appearance on Rebels, as well as his role in Rogue One that he is someone who uses unconventional means in how he wages war, and that this is not looked upon highly by the Alliance. It will be interesting to see how this leads to a new direction for the Rebel Alliance as we get closer to all-out warfare in the timeline.
Speaking of warfare, we also get a glimpse of Grand Moff Tarkin and Grand Admiral Thrawn. Tarkin is not pleased with Thrawn’s inability to capture the Rebels, and casually mentions that Director Orson Krennic’s Project Star-Dust might be more effective. Star-Dust, as you may recall, is the Empire’s code name for the Death Star, and this is a huge name drop. We all know where this is heading, and perhaps this might indicate Thrawn’s absence in the Original Trilogy.
We also get looks at the Rebellion’s new base on Yavin IV, as well as the X-Wings going into battle. Kanan and Hera also look to rekindle their relationship in the upcoming season, as it has been sidetracked by both of their responsibilities towards the Rebellion and, for Kanan, to the Jedi Order and his apprentice. We will certainly learn even more as we get closer to the premiere date.
Star Wars Rebels was created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sherlock Holmes), and Carrie Beck. The Lucasfilm animated series is executive-produced by Filoni and Kinberg.
The series features the voice cast of Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, Sam Witwer as Maul, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex, David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus, and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Star Wars Rebels Season 3 is available on Blu-ray and DVD today. The series is set to return later this fall for its fourth and final season. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the Star Wars franchise as we learn it.
