During the “Animated Origins & Unexpected Fates” panel this past Thursday at Star Wars Celebration Orlando, Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars executive producer Dave Filoni and the Lucasfilm story group’s Pablo Hidalgo might have confirmed a very popular fan theory.

While sharing various concept art and design work from both animated series during their panel, Filoni and Hidalgo revealed an image of Star Wars Rebels character Rex wearing camouflage Rebel garb. The uniform matches the ones worn by Rebel soldiers in Return of the Jedi (see above image).

It’s a bit of a retcon, but the fan theory in question suggests that Captain Rex, a clone trooper voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (like all clone troopers) that first appeared in The Clone Wars and then later returned for Rebels, actually appears in Return of the Jedi. If you look at the image at the top of this page, the Rebel soldier standing at the front seems to have the exact same beard as Rex sports on Rebels.

The uniform in the image shared at the panel combined with Filoni and Hildalgo’s coy remarks like “Just speculate away, we’re just putting it out there,” seem to be enough to confirm his appearance in the original saga film. This would also mean that he lives long enough to still be alive in that era, so don’t expect to have to say goodbye to him before Rebels comes to an end.

This would not be the first time something like this has happened. A Jedi named Quinlan Vos first appeared as a background character in The Phantom Menace before being more fully developed for a couple episodes of Clone Wars and later he even ended up playing a prominent role in the novel Dark Disciple.

Expect to hear more Star Wars Rebels news as the weekend hits, as the official Rebels panel will take place on Saturday morning. And be sure to check back right here on Heroic Hollywood for all of our Star Wars and Star Wars Rebels coverage from this year’s Star Wars Celebration.

Star Wars Rebels will return for its fourth season this fall on Disney XD.
