Star Wars: The Last Jedi was 2017’s top grossing film. While it was met with near universal critical acclaim, the film split Star Wars fandom down the middle. With some loving, some being vocal about their dislike for it. The reaction of either liking or disliking the film was down to the choices that writer/director Rian Johnson made with the film’s narrative and where he took the main characters from when we last saw them. For a vast majority of the fans, the film was what Star Wars needed, a change towards a new direction. For a lot, it didn’t do the characters or the saga justice. But one thing both sides agree upon, The Last Jedi could use more key scenes, particularly Rey’s training. The fact that Rian Johnson said that the assembly cut was over three hours long, definitely adds credibility to that sentiment.
In a Twitter response to Mark Hamill’s response to a fan asking why a key scene between Rey and Luke Skywalker was deleted, Rian Johnson confirmed that commentary on that scene will be included when The Last Jedi hits Blu-Ray and DVD in the next few weeks. Not only that, he went on to say that every deleted scene will have commentary, and blamed the need to cut the scenes on pacing. Check out his response below:
It’s in there! And all the deleted scenes will have a commentary track from me where I’ll contextualize them and explain why they were cut, but the universal answer is “pacing.” Pacing is a cruel mistress.

The fact that he will be commenting on each scene to give them context and why they were cut is a bonus for fans who have spent the last few months wondering what happened behind the scenes and of the creative process that Johnson went through in cutting the film to the version that was released in the cinemas.
