The new Star Wars movies have toyed with the idea of Rey going to the Dark Side, and footage description of a recent sizzle reel for The Rise of Skywalker indicates that we’ll see some kind of vision of what that might look like.
Revealed at Disney D23 earlier today was a series of sizzle reel clips showcasing completed sequences from The Rise of Skywalker in quick succession; not quite a new trailer, but it should definitely get people talking once it’s available to the public (more on that in just a bit). The talk of the panel appeared to be a short scene of Rey in Dark Side attire, wielding a double-bladed red lightsaber that might inspire memories of the iconic Sith Lord of The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul.
The description can be read below:
In new footage shot of “evil” Rey in hood with the double ended red saber which she unfolds from two pieces. PROBABLY A VISION but a very very very cool shot. #D23 #StarWars

The sizzle reel footage, while not revealed to the public as of yet, is expected to arrive on Monday according to Entertainment Weekly. In any case, this is not necessarily a new tactic for Lucasfilm; very close to the release of The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm revealed a short, out-of-context clip of Rey using Kylo Ren’s lightsaber in Snoke’s throne room. While that clip didn’t have as much significance in the story as the TV spot it was shown in would imply, it seems like this shot of an alternate, more sinister Rey in The Rise of Skywalker could very much factor into the largely-under-wraps story to the final film in the Star Wars Skywalker Saga.
Directed by J. J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in theaters on December 20, 2019.
