During an interview on Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, director Rian Johnson explained why he decided to take so many creative risks with Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened to acclaimed from critics and many fans of the franchise who praised director Rian Johnson for taking the series in a new direction while subverting expectations. However, a vocal group of detractors was less-than-thrilled with the creative decisions Rian Johnson made on The Last Jedi and many continue to express their dismay on social media to this day.
When asked why he opted to take so many creative risks on The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson explained that he believes treading new ground and risk-taking is actually in line with what the filmmakers on the previous Star Wars films did:
“I think the instant you start thinking in terms of how do you not step outside of the bounds of what the original movies did, you’re not thinking the way the people who made the original movies did. They were with every movie, they were pushing it forward, with every movie they were stepping outside those bounds and pushing the characters into new, emotionally honest, but surprising places. That’s why those movies are great. That’s why they’re alive. If they had been looking at something that came before it and saying, ‘Oh, we better not do this because that is outside of this or that,’ it would’ve been different.”
Rian Johnson is currently developing a new trilogy of Star Wars film while the sequel trilogy is set to conclude with the upcoming release of The Rise of Skywalker.
