With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story now behind us, fans are looking towards the upcoming release of Star Wars: Episode VIII and the resolution to the meeting between Rey and Luke Skywalker. Now, in an interview with USA Today, director Rian Johnson has shared new details about the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, including the tone of the film and what awaits the new heroes introduced in The Force Awakens.
Known for noir and mystery films such as Brick and Looper, some fans speculated that tapping Johnson to helm Episode VIII would mean the film would be darker than it’s predecessor, not unlike how The Empire Strikes Back was a comparatively darker entry than A New Hope. That does not appear to be the case, according the Johnson.
“I want it to be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were.”
While fans have been speculating on the backstory’s of the new heroes introduced in The Force Awakens, Johnson explains that the next film will explore more than just their respective origins.
“I wanted to know more about each of them, and that doesn’t just mean information or backstory. Figure out what’s the most difficult thing each of them could be challenged with now — let’s throw that at them and dig into what really makes them tick by seeing how they handle that.”
Rian Johnson has discussed the important relationship between Rey and Luke Skywalker, and now he has shared some details on where we find both characters when the film picks up.
“[…] both not knowing what’s going to happen and also having a lot of expectations in her head about how this is going to go. It very much feels like what we all go through in adolescence, the dawning of this new chapter of our lives.”
Johnson added that the theme of family will continue in Episode VIII and will be particularly important for one character.
“[They are] a huge part of especially Rey’s character, something that was a really powerful part of her setup and something I really wanted to dig into with this.”
Johnson also explained his approach to Luke Skywalker’s role in the film.
“What’s going on with Luke Skywalker?” is the essential question at the heart of the new film. “I’m approaching it with a take that I hope feels honest and real and is going to be interesting to folks and make sense.”
Johnson was humorously coy when it asked about an official title for Episode VIII, but confirmed he has one in mind.
“It was in the very first draft I wrote. I’ll just blurt it out right now! All in good time, my friend.”
