Star Wars voice actor Sam Witwer shared his own criticisms of director Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi.
When director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuted in theaters, many fans praised the second chapter of the sequel trilogy for taking the story and characters in directions that few expected. However, some fans were less than thrilled to see the film subvert fan expectations and actor Sam Witwer had added his voice to those who were disappointed by Rian Johnson’s entry in the franchise.
During a stream of Star Wars Battlefront II on Twitch, Sam Witwer stated that he felt The Last Jedi was made by someone “who hadn’t quite done his homework.” Witwer, who voices several characters in the franchise’s animated series’ and video games, added that does not feel Rian Johnson provided a justifiable reason for why Luke Skywalker initially refused to help Leia and the resistance:
“I think Rian Johnson’s a talented guy, but Bruce Lee didn’t develop Jeet Kune Do without learning Kung Fu first. You can’t reinvent Star Wars without knowing Star Wars first and he didn’t — for me — make a compelling argument for why Luke didn’t go and help his sister.”
