Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker creature effects creative supervisor Neal Scanlan revealed Steven Spielberg may have saved Babu Frik from a grim fate.
While Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was not the satisfying conclusion to the main saga most fans hoped for, even some of the film’s harshest critics fell in love with a new creature named Babu Frik. However, it turns out the beloved Babu Frik was originally going to suffer a terrible fate and he may have been spared thanks to revered filmmaker Steven Spielberg.
During the final battle between the Resistance and Emperor Palpatine’s forces, Zorii Bliss is among the many pilots who arrive with their spacecraft and Babu Frik is seen by her side. In an interview with Empire, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker creature effects creative supervisor Neal Scanlan revealed that there is a rumor suggesting Babu Frik’s inclusion in the scene was prompted by a question from Steven Spielberg during a screening of the film:
“It could be a rumour, but I believe J.J. screened the movie for Steven Spielberg, and at the end Spielberg said, ‘What happened to Babu?’ Everybody thought, ‘Oh God, what did happen to Babu?'”
Actor Shirley Henderson, who voiced Baby Frik and puppeteered his mouth, added she was surprised to see the character return during the aforementioned battle. As Henderson explained, footage of Babu Frik being on the planet Kijimi when it was destroyed was shot:
“I think he was going to die originally – I think the AD shot that. When the planet [Kijimi] was blown up, he was on it.”
Scanlan added that the digital effects team turned to additional footage to add Babu Frik to the final battle, saying, “The ILM guys found one, lifted out Babu and put him into Zorii’s ship at the end.”
