Director J. J. Abrams revealed the backstory of John Boyega’s Finn will be explored in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

J. J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced John Boyega’s Finn as a disillusioned Stormtrooper who left the First Order and became embroiled in a journey that led him to the Resistance. While the film revealed that John Boyega’s Finn was sold to the First Order at a young age, little else has been revealed about the character’s past since his introduction.

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker set to bring the nine-part saga to a definitive conclusion, some fans are hoping to learn more about the past of John Boyega’s Finn before the main film series ends. During an interview with Vanity Fair, J. J. Abrams confirmed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will examine more of the history of John Boyega’s Finn:

“It is part of the story of this one. And it was alluded to in Episode VII, but there’s a bit more light shed on that in this one.”

J. J. Abrams added that John Boyega’s Finn won’t be the only character to get more backstory, as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will shed more light on the past of each character:

“I would say that each of the characters get more light shed on their histories. I’m not saying we get full, exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are. But there are a lot of questions about Finn’s past, about Poe’s past, obviously Rey and Kylo, and then some of the new characters we meet.”
