Last week, Colin Trevorrow was fired by Lucasfilm. Trevorrow had previously been tapped to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, but it was reported that the director and higher-ups at Lucasfilm were not on the same page. Now, an actor from the new trilogy of Star Wars films spoke about the firing.
Domhnall Gleeson, who plays General Hux, spoke to IGN about his opinion about the shift in directors. He was a little cagey with his response – after all, The Last Jedi has yet to premiere, so we don’t yet know if Gleeson’s character will be making it to the final entry in this trilogy. He said:
“I can’t speak from any perspective except for the fact as somebody who likes the movies because it’s not been disclosed to anybody — because obviously nobody knows what’s going to happen with The Last Jedi — whether I’ll be involved in that film or not. So I don’t think of it as somebody who’s necessarily involved or not involved, that’s just its own thing.”
Gleeson went on to note that while he does feel for the ousted director, if the company felt that it was the best move for the franchise then perhaps it is worth moving forward from to try and make the best movie:
“But, you know, I think it’s very bad for Colin but if that was — but if the right thing to do is to part company, the most right thing to do is the same in any relationship, you know? That happens.”
The man behind Hux also noted that he is excited to work with incoming Episode IX director J.J. Abrams again, as he enjoyed working with him on The Force Awakens:
“And then with J.J., he’s a great director. I think that he did a brilliant job on the first one and it makes absolute sense why after they parted company with Colin that was the place they looked and I think it’s very exciting for the fans of the film that he’s back.”
You can catch Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux next in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will rise on December 15, 2017. The movie’s cast includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ”, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, and Jimmy Vee as R2-D2.
