Stephen Amell Open To ‘Arrow’ Return To Take The Arrowverse To New Places

Is it time for a Green Arrow comeback?

Arrow star Stephen Amell has talked about remaining open to returning to the CW series, two years after his exit, which he would like to see taken to new platforms with fewer restrictions.

Stephen Amell played Oliver Queen and his vigilante alter ego, the Green Arrow, in the TV series inspired by the DC comics character. Arrow first aired in 2012 and came to a close with its eighth season finale in January 2020, following Oliver Queen’s major role in the crossover event Crisis On Infinite Earths. Arrow was the flagship show of DC’s so-called Arrowverse, which also included the spin-off series The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Batwoman. Since Amell’s departure, the Arrowverse has continued to expand, now including Stargirl, Superman & Lois and the previously standalone Black Lightning.

Arrow ended after Stephen Amell decided to leave the role, a decision he attributed to feeling the character of Oliver had gone as far as he could take him and wanting to spend more time with his family than Arrow‘s busy shooting schedule would allow. However, in a recent interview with Den of Geek, Amell confessed to missing the series and said he would be open to a return. He talked about how he would hope that any return would help move the Arrowverse to new, potentially bloodier, places:

“Oh, sure. I owe so much to the people of DC, The CW, and Warner Bros. Television. I love the character so much and only love it more now that it’s coming up on two years since we wrapped the show….But having a little space now, I saw that I miss it. I do look back very, very, very fondly on it….Listen, I’m the namesake. So if I can ever be of any any help, if I can be of service to the Arrowverse in any way, shape or form, or better still take it to a new place, which I think would be the more interesting route to go, be that in a limited capacity or on a different platform, maybe one where we could show blood, that’d be really cool.”

Arrow openly drew inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, particularly in its early seasons, taking the character of Green Arrow in a darker and more grounded direction than had been seen before. Given the darker and more violent tone of the show, it’s no surprise Amell would like to see it escape some of the restrictions it faced on The CW.
