Stephen Lang shed new light on his character’s journey in James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels.
The first Avatar film introduced audiences to Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch, the head of a mining operations security detail on Pandora who eventually leads an assault on the Tree of Souls, a spiritually significant location to the Na’vi. During the battle, Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch nearly murders lead hero Jake Sully until he is confronted by the Na’vi princess Neytiri, who shoots the villain in the heart.
Yet, despite the seemingly undeniable death of Miles Quaritch, Stephen Lang is set to reprise the role in James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels, the first of which is set to debut in December 2021. During an interview with The National, Lang commented on what he hopes to achieve as he further explores the character:
“It’s very satisfying to know that the character was valued enough and made enough of an impression to [have Cameron] say ‘we’re not done with him yet’. That, initially, was kind of wonderful, to me. My job is really to advocate the role that I’m playing, and so it’s satisfying to have that much more time to discover Quaritch, find out what makes him tick, talk about him, and hopefully defy expectations that people have for the character, to create new expectations.”
Stephen Lang also commented on how Miles Quaritch will evolve over the course of the four Avatar sequels:
“He has evolved, definitely. We’re making four more films, so if he doesn’t evolve, we’re in some kind of trouble. And it’s not always a question of evolution, it’s about becoming more deeply entrenched. I’m still discovering it. That’s something I’ll be discovering as we continue to work because we’re by no means near finished with this process.”
When asked if Avatar 2 might be able to dethrone Avengers: Endgame at the global box office, Stephen Lang replied, “I expect so.”
