Steve Agee is returning to the role of John Economos for the upcoming Amanda Waller series starring Viola Davis. DC Studios co-head James Gunn confirmed Agee’s DC Universe return with a post on his official Bluesky Social page.

John Economos is a significant character in James Gunn’s DC universe projects and his return to the screen should be a welcome surprise for fans. Agee made his debut as Economos in the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, before reprising the role for Peacemaker and Black Adam.

For those unfamiliar with the character, John Economos is a member of the A.R.G.U.S. organization who works for Amanda Waller. He is known for his no-nonsense attitude and his dedication to his job, even in the face of danger.

James Gunn’s John Economos tease is just the latest in a series of hints from the filmmaker about his DC Universe plans. Gunn has become a fan-favorite in the DC community thanks to his work on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, with fans are eagerly anticipating his next DCU projects with Peter Safran.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

The FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
