Steven Soderbergh has revealed why he has no intention to helm a superhero film.

Everyone in Hollywood has an opinion on superhero movies. After all, they’ve rapidly become the dominant cultural art form. It also helps that films from DC and Marvel continue to make billions of dollars at the box office. While profits and critical acclaim are at all-time highs, some directors aren’t drinking the superhero kool-aid. Numerous directors have dismissed and even denounced superhero films, most notably director Martin Scorsese, who felt the wrath of Marvel fans when he compared Kevin Feige’s films to theme park rides.

Some directors have been a bit more kinder, stating that they have no interest in them. One prolific creator who has no intention of crafting a film based on heroes is Steven Soderbergh, best known for the Ocean’s and Magic Mike films. The auteur recently revealed why he has no plans to take on a project for the likes of Marvel or DC when speaking with The Daily Beast.

“For me to understand the world and how to write or supervise the writing of the story and the characters — apart from the fact that I can bend time and defy gravity and shoot beams out of my fingers — there’s no [frick]ing. Nobody’s [frick]ing! Like, I don’t know how to tell people how to behave in a world in which that is not a thing… the fantasy-spectacle universe, as far as I can tell, typically doesn’t involve a lot of [frick]ing, and also things like — who’s paying these people? Who do they work for? How does this job come to be?”

Clearly, Steven Soderbergh hasn’t seen Chloe Zhao’s Eternals, as the film notably featured a sex scene. While Soderbergh himself has no interest in directing a superhero project, he did make it clear that he doesn’t believe they’re “lower tier in any way”.
