Actress Alexandra Shipp, who plays Storm in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, says it is time for her character to get her own film.

Alexandra Shipp is having a great year and her career is really heating up. After successfully taking over the role of Storm from the iconic Halle Berry, the actress has locked herself into another hit franchise as the female lead for the Shaft reboot. She will be honored for her performance in Love, Simon at the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy awards with the Max Mara Face of the Future Award. The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Shipp ahead of the ceremony and asked her if she thought it was time for her chacracetr Storm to get her own movie.

“Not yet, but I am hoping we will get around to it. It is definitely time for these Storm fans to get the movie they have been dying for.”

Shipp then briefly spoke on what she would want to see happen to the member of the X-Men in her own film.

“There are so many different storylines that we could take on when it comes to Storm — whether she is losing her powers or going back to Africa. I just want there to be a message of “this woman doesn’t need a man.” Just one movie where a woman doesn’t need a man, really.”

Shipp is making her way to the A-list status so it could be a game-changing opportunity for the X-Men franchise to give Storm her own cinematic solo outing. After the success of Marvel’s Black Panther, a Storm film set in Africa could be just what this franchise needs to begin branching out into solo films once again. The X-Men universe has yet to experiment with diverse standalone properties, focusing only on the likes of Wolverine and Deadpool. Storm could be Fox’s Black Panther and would be the ideal choice for the X-Men’s first female solo outing.

DC had amazing success with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel is tracking very well with fans. X-Men needs to catch up with the times and give Alexandra Shipp her own Storm film. Until that day comes, fans can relive all of Alexandra Shipp’s epic moments as Storm from X-Men: Apocalypse ahead of the upcoming Dark Phoenix.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, Kodi-Smit McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, Lamar Johnson, Sophie Turner, and Jessica Chastain.

Dark Phoenix hits theaters February 14, 2019.
