The fourth season of Stranger Things has come to an end with the release of Volume 2 on Netflix and not everyone makes it out alive. Spoilers follow.
Stranger Things fans have been expecting the worst for several characters in their fight against Vecna this season, with rumors circulating that several major players were going to meet their demise. Surprisingly, however, all of the returning protagonists from previous seasons survived the dramatic events of the season finale, though things are looking bad for one of them. Outside the series regulars, four major Season 4 players were killed off.
Vecna’s Victims & Other Fatalities
The first major loss was a character Stranger Things fans had previously believed to have died, but this time it looks like he won’t be coming back. Dr. Martin Brenner was the scientist responsible for giving Eleven her powers. After his apparent death in Season 1, the sinister scientist made a shocking return in Season 4. This time around though, he was shot down and killed by the military, with Eleven leaving him to die in the desert.
Vecna himself, revealed to be another of Dr. Brenner’s test subjects who was mutated in the Upside Down, also met his end after an encounter with Eleven. Eleven, with assistance from Mike’s timely confession of love, managed to paralyze Vecna. Steve, Nancy and Robin then finished off the villain, though given his supernatural abilities, perhaps a return should not be ruled out. Sadly though, the confrontation with Vecna left Max injured, resulting in her becoming nonresponsive in a coma by the finale’s end.
Stranger Things newcomer Eddie Munson also met his demise in the finale. While he was only introduced this season, Eddie became a much-loved new member of the group. In an attempt to atone for what he felt was cowardice when he had gone into hiding after Vecna’s first murder in Season 4 Volume 1, Eddie lured a swarm of demobats away from Dustin. The creatures attacked him, leaving him with fatal injuries.
Jason Carver, who had been leading the charge against Eddie, accusing him of leading a Satanic cult, was also killed in the Upside Down. While Vecna was defeated, he was able to open a rift, joining the Upside Down to Hawkins. As it opened up, the rift tore Jason in two, killing him as he screamed in pain.
