David Ayer praised Joker actor Jared Leto in response to fan criticism regarding his comments in a behind-the-scenes video for Suicide Squad.
For his role as the Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Jared Leto underwent a series of makeup and camera tests to help the filmmakers settle on the look for his version of the iconic villain. This Joker transformation process was documented in a behind-the-scenes video wherein David Ayer can be heard saying, “you are free, my man,” after Jared Leto gets his hair cut for Suicide Squad.
This comment prompted one fan to reach out to David Ayer and question what the filmmaker meant by that statement, arguing that Jared Leto has reached high celebrity status and the Joker actor has nothing to be free from. In response, David Ayer said that he was simply suggesting Jared Leto was simply free from the toil of caring for long hair and commended the Joker actor for being a “gentle, smart, gifted dude.”

Jared Leto was previously reported to be attached to various DC Films projects, including Gotham City Sirens, a Joker and Harley Quinn film, and a standalone project centered on his version of the iconic Batman villain. However, while Jared Leto was expressed his willingness to reprise his role as the Joker, there has been little to no word on the status of the aforementioned DC films for some time now.
The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the Suicide Squad in his upcoming movie.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
