‘Supergirl’: Chyler Leigh Talks Alex-Kara Conflict, Plus More…

Speaking at a recent The CW Q&A, Chyler Leigh spoke about the Alex-Kara conflict in 'Homecoming,' plus more about the upcoming 'Supergirl' episode.

Supergirl Homecoming Alex KaraAs we know from the trailer and synopsis for tonight’s episode of Supergirl, titled “Homecoming,” Jeremiah Danvers’ (Dean Cain) sudden return will bring both jubilation and conflict. Not only will Mon-El (Chris Wood) be suspicious of Jeremiah’s return, but his questioning will lead to conflict between Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Kara (Melissa Benoist). Speaking at a recent The CW Q&A, Leigh and executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had a bit to say about the episode.

“Alex so wholeheartedly wants to believe that he’s [Jeremiah] absolutely right and that everybody should just jump in and trust him, no questions asked, just from the standpoint of being a daughter and not having seen him in so long,” Leigh said.

However, Alex’s unquestioning belief in her father will put her at odds with not only Mon-El, but Kara, something that’s a challenge for Leigh as an actor, given her off-screen friendship with co-star Melissa Benoist.

“It’s really hard. It’s really hard! Always afterwards when we’re done with the scene, I’m like, ‘I’m really sorry that I yelled at you.’ It’s just strange but I love her so much.”

Kreisberg also chimed in about the women’s relationship.

“Chyler and Melissa love each other so much that they’re not worried about fights or people swinging guns or explosions. They get worried about the scenes where they have to fight with each other,” he laughed.

Conflict like this may be rare for Kara and Alex, but for Kara and Mon-El, it’s par for the course.

“It’s sort of where they live,” Kreisberg said. “We love those banter-y scenes between them, where they have this sort of Sam and Diane or David and Maddie from Moonlighting kind of dynamic between them. For us, what was so much fun about this episode is usually Mon-El is in the wrong and it’s an episode about Mon-El learning to be a better hero, and in this episode, ironically, it’s like [the others] are so close to the problem emotionally that they can’t see it, so Mon-El is actually the one who’s the most clear-eyed, which was an interesting perspective to put him in.”

We’ll see how the conflict between Alex and Kara plays out tonight in “Homecoming.”
