Superman: Legacy will not only re-introduce a new Clark Kent and Superman, the film will also do some world building and introduce superhero team The Authority, according to media reports.

According to Friday’s Heat Vision newsletter, “James Gunn is chugging along with Superman: Legacy, with the screen tests for Clark Kent and Lois Lane to happen over Father’s Day weekend. (Roles such as Lex Luthor and members of supergroup The Authority, which are to be introduced in the movie, will be cast after.)”

Who are The Authority?

The Authority is a superhero team that was first introduced in 1999 by comic book writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch. The team is mainly composed of Ellis-created characters from Stormwatch and is published under the Wildstorm imprint, which was founded by Jim Lee. The Authority is known for being a group of antiheroes who are committed to saving the world at any cost. The team’s adventures have been chronicled in a comic book series published by DC Comics. The Authority’s connection to the DC Universe has evolved over the years, with some of the Wildstorm characters making the jump to the main line after DC shuttered the Wildstorm imprint in 2010 and the New 52 event reimagined the DC Universe in 2011. A film centered on the team is currently in development at DC Studios.

In the DCU chapter one slate reveal, Gunn used the cover of The Authority #1, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, to tease the arrival of the original roster of the antihero team to the big screen.

The Authority’s lineup of members originate from Stormwatch, which include Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, The Engineer, Apollo and Midnighter.

Jack Hawksmoor and The Engineer are rumored to be The Authority members making appearances.

The Future of DC Studios

James Gunn and Peter Safran announced ten film and television projects last year that are currently in pre-production at DC Studios during a presentation at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. The first chapter of the DC Universe is called “Gods and Monsters,” according to the two DC Studios heads. Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Christal Henry and Tom King are part of the DCU creative team.
