Superman & Lois Showrunner Todd Helbing has confirmed just what exactly the season 2 premiere is teasing.

Spoilers ahead for Superman & Lois‘ season 2 premiere.

The second season premiere of Superman & Lois ended with a huge tease that has sent shockwaves across the fandom. As the episode comes to a close, we return to the mines, which were responsible for an earthquake that rocked Smallville. In the final moments, we realize that the quakes were caused by a gloved fist punching through the ground.

Speaking with EW, Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing confirmed that the scene is setting up Doomsday, one of the Man of Steel’s most nefarious villains. While the first episode was just a tease, Helbing has confirmed that we’ll see the villain very, very soon.

“That is our homage to a classic Doomsday cover. Then in episode 2, you’re going to see him a little bit more. In episode 3, you’ll get the full reveal.”

Doomsday is one of Superman’s most iconic and powerful villains – one that has notably defeated the Man of Steel countless times. Helbing continued his chat with the outlet by teasing Superman & Lois‘ take on the Kryptonian villain.

“There’s so much lore [and] mythology in the Superman universe that we feel it’s our obligation to tell a unique story. We take inspirations from the comics as much as possible, and then we try to twist it. We did the same thing here.”

“I think one of the things that we all really dig about the comic book world, but particularly with the villains, is finding ways to use assumptions about a character, and then flipping that, and finding ways to explain things that haven’t been explained in the comics, like the use of something, or why a character does a certain thing. It’ll all be revealed in episode 3, but there are a couple little things that we’re doing that I can’t explain too much, because I’ll give it away, but you’ll see how we’re influenced by certain pieces and why we used it to create work that is hopefully a cool reveal.”

Superman & Lois is ramping things up quite nicely this season. With Superman’s political life in turmoil thanks to the Department of Defense, it’ll be interesting to see just how the Man of Steel will be able to tackle Doomsday, his most powerful villain yet. Perhaps Clark Kent will have to enlist the help of the powered kids in the Supermen of American program?
