Supernatural star Jensen Ackles recently revealed that, at one point, the people behind the show wanted Bruce Campbell as an older version of John Winchester.
John Winchester first appeared in the pilot episode of Supernatural and was portrayed by Jeffery Dean Morgan. The character frequently appeared in flashbacks throughout the series and who’s disappearance forced his sons to reunite. The character would often disappear due in part to star Jeffry Dean Morgan’s busy schedule before being writing off of the show altogether at the end of the second season. At one point, however, two actors were meant to portray the character.
While speaking to Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast, Supernatural star Jensen Ackles revealed that Jeffery Dean Morgan wasn’t the only person the people behind the show wanted to portray John Winchester. The idea, at one point, was to have Jeffery Dean Morgan portray the younger version of the character while Bruce Campell played the older version. Ultimately, however, they were unable to make it work and made Morgan look older through makeup:
“That was the only person that they wanted. Ultimately, they couldn’t make it happen, whether it was [because of his] schedule or whatever. So they kind of threw their hands up in the air, and [were] like, ‘Well, maybe we can just age Jeff up and have him come back and play an older version of himself.'”
